Animals of Polar Regions: ImagesNOAA Photo Library: Antarctica This collection of approximately 100 images of birds, mammals and fish from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration/ Department of Commerce is an excellent source for images for multimedia presentations and posters. These images can be used freely by students and teachers as long as credit is given to NOAA. Bear Beginnings: New Life on the Ice: Arctic This site from National Geographic has wonderful images of mother polar bears and their babies. Notations on the images make it easy to learn more about how the photographs were taken so students can learn to take better photos in snowy conditions. Educators may use these images in a very limited fashion if they follow the specific rules outlined by National Geographic for school use. ISTE Student Technology Standard 2: Social, ethical and human issues related to technology (copyright) The Canadian Wildlife Service provides high quality images and video clips of several Arctic birds and mammals. Schools and libraries can order free of charge one complete series of fact sheets which include the images for use in the classroom. This group's publications may be reproduced without permission if you follow the rules outlined. ISTE Student Technology Standard 2: Social, ethical and human issues related to technology (copyright) Creature Feature - Emperor Penguins: Antarctic A wonderful site from National Geographic that features video, sounds, and stills of this wonderful creature. You can send a picture postcard to a friend via e-mail here, but be sure to remember student privacy laws if using in a classroom. Great for use in the classroom as a supplement for a teacher lecture if you follow the specific rules outlined by National Geographic for school use. ISTE Student Technology Standard 2: Social, ethical and human issues related to technology (copyright) Pete & Barbara's Penguin Pages: Antarctic Here are approximately 200 photographs of different species of penguins. The authors have granted permission to use any of the graphics for educational and/or personal use, so these are perfect for student projects. This is a great resource for teachers. Be sure to thank the authors and let them know how you used photos from this archive. Encourage those who share so freely. The Antarctic Connection - Gallery You can see photographs of birds, whales, and seals here. These can be sent as digital postcards to a collaborating classroom or to parents and grandparents who have an e-mail address. This site did not post a copyright policy for use of the images (at least I couldn't locate it) but since much of their material is for sale, you should inquire before using the images in any student projects. ISTE Student Technology Standard 4: Uses technology communications tools Super high-quality photographs of wildlife and scenery. The copyright statement indicates that students can use these graphics and text for homework and projects, but that they may not be used by any other entity, profit-making or not. The copyright requirements for student use are spelled out quite clearly and should be read completely to be sure you do not violate them. This will encourage this group to keep their photographs available to educators. This site also provides a lot of information about the animals which can be located under the Fact File link.
