Chapter 8 - Around McMurdo - Church![]() There is a church in McMurdo called the Chapel of the Snows. We went to Christmas services there. They have a Catholic priest, a Protestant minister and a Latter Day Saints clergy so many faiths can worship here at different times. The church was built by volunteers in the 1980s. ![]() The stained glass window was really beautiful. We both thought it was neat that it had a map of Antarctica and a penguin on it. ![]() They also have on display the Erebus Communion Chalice. This is a museum piece, having been brought to Antarctica on the ship, Erebus, by a member of James Clark Ross's expedition in 1841. This chalice was used for communion at our Christmas service. The chalice is silver and gold with engravings on it. It is really beautiful and special to be able to touch it and know that it was used by some of the first people to ever come to Antarctica. |
